🏙️ Understanding Venice: A City of Water and Wonder

Made of 118 small islands connected by more than 400 bridges, the maze of canals, piazzas, and hidden courtyards combines history with the rhythm of daily Venetian life. The city is divided into six historic districts, known as sestieri, each with its own character:

  • San Marco: The city’s grand stage, home to the Basilica and Doge’s Palace.
  • San Polo & Santa Croce: Central, atmospheric, and filled with artisan workshops.
  • Dorsoduro: Artistic and elegant, home to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.
  • Cannaregio: Where locals still outnumber tourists — think authentic and relaxed.
  • Castello: Quiet, residential, and filled with gardens and local markets.

🌊 What Is Acqua Alta?

When visiting in the fall or winter, you may hear about acqua alta — the seasonal high tides that occasionally flood parts of the city. It’s a natural phenomenon caused by tides, wind, and weather patterns, and Venetians have lived with it for centuries.

When acqua alta is expected, raised walkways appear across major pedestrian routes, and you get updates via mobile apps or hotel alerts. Most of the time, it’s short-lived and even part of Venice’s charm, Just bring waterproof shoes or grab a pair of disposable boots sold at local shops.

💡 Insider tip: St. Mark’s Square floods first, but much of the city remains walkable.

💶 Venice Tourist Tax (and Why It Exists)

Venice is one of the most-visited cities in the world — and also one of the most fragile. To help protect its infrastructure and heritage, the city introduced a Venice tourist access fee, applied to day visitors entering the historic center.

If you’re staying overnight, you’ll pay a small city tax (tassa di soggiorno) through your hotel instead. The funds support preservation efforts, waste management, and services for locals.

🧾 Good to know: Your hotel includes the tax on your bill, so you don’t need to pay anything extra when entering Venice.

⚖️ Venice and Overtourism: How to Visit Respectfully

Venice welcomes millions of visitors annually, but its narrow streets and limited space mean the city is constantly balancing tourism with local life. The best way to experience Venice — and to help preserve it — is to travel slowly and mindfully.

A few ways to be a thoughtful guest:

  • Stay at least two nights to support the local economy and see the city beyond the day crowds.
  • Explore early mornings or late evenings — Venice glows when it’s quiet.
  • Choose local guides and family-run businesses.
  • Respect residential areas by keeping noise low and walking single-file on narrow streets.
  • Avoid picnicking on bridges or monuments.
