turin one day tours

Tons of guests come for Juventus – so make the city’s sports history and culture part of your Turin day tours! Elena stepped up for this as the world of Turin sports eludes me. Um, am I the only one to recently learn that the city has two football teams, not one? For almost 10 years I thought “Juventus” and “Torino” were used interchangeably (ya, know, like my basketball team: Portland / The Blazers! Rip city, baby!) Last year, a client set me straight and when I mentioned it to my (then) 6-year-old, he was not impressed. So, enjoy your crash course on Turin sports, then book your tour (obviously, not led by me! But I should probably join to learn more!) Forza! Val

The rise of football in Turin

The explosive rise of Turin football links intricately to the establishment of the city’s two prominent football clubs (FC): Juventus FC and Torino FC. The rich history of both contribute greatly to the growth and popularity of football in Turin and Italy as a whole.

In addition to the club level, Turin also plays host to important international matches. As the  match host for several World Cup games and European Championships, the city enjoys a powerful role as a global football city.

Overall, the city attributes its football acclaim to its successes, rivalries, and passionate fans with clubs like Juventus and Torino. The sport itself is deeply ingrained in the city’s cultural fabric, making Turin an integral part of Italian and global football history.

The Torino Football Club

Torino FC, simply called “Torino,” was founded in 1906, also playing a significant role in the rise of Turin football. Although Torino has not seen the same level of success as Juventus, their list of accomplishments is still impressive. Torino has won the Serie A Title (the top in the Italian football league) seven times and the team’s passionate fan base continues to support them ferociously.

The Torino FC Tragedy

In 1949, a plane carrying the entire Torino football team, along with coaching staff and journalists, crashed into the back wall of Turin’s Basilica of Superga. The team was returning from a friendly match in Lisbon, Portugal. All 31 people aboard, including 18 players from the legendary Torino team died.

During that time, the legendary team known as Il Grande Torino (The Great Torino), dominated Italian football. Still today the profound effects of the tragedy linger in the football community all across Italy. The day remains one of the darkest moments in the history of Italian sports.

Juventus vs Torino: The Rivalry

The Juventus versus Torino rivalry remains central to Turin’s football culture. The local match, Derby della Mole, is one of the season’s most anticipated with intense rivalry and emotions on display.

But the success of Juventus and Torino, coupled with their supporters, fuels the growth of Turin football culture. The city has become a hub for football enthusiasts, hosting matches, and attracting international players. Turin’s Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino, shared by both clubs, is a prominent Italian stadium that has witnessed countless thrilling matches over the years.
